Adv. Steyn Fourie
Steyn is an admitted Advocate (since 1997) and a member of the Gauteng Society of Advocates (GSA) specialising in labour law and criminal law before accepting a position as Magistrate with the Department of Justice in January 2009 until 2016 where he presided over mainly criminal and family law matters. He returned to be a member of GSA during 2016. From the Bar he specialised in Labour Law. His position as Labour Law Advocate also laid the foundation for his appointment as a part-time CCMA Commissioner (July 2017 – current) and serving on other Bargaining Councils within various sectors. He is also an ESC Commissioner specialising in essential services. In this capacity he conciliated and arbitrated numerous labour disputes in the Mining Sector and also specialising in IBA (Inquiry by Arbitrator) processes adjudication over sexual harassment cases within the Educational sector. He is a “Outside” Chairperson to internal processes to various Corporate Companies. Being a Court Annexed Mediator he lately ventured into the mediating of Taxation disputes. He has presented various training sessions with specialized training on Sexual Harassment and Bullying in Education. He has also co-authored a chapter on labour law in a published textbook called; Die Basiese Beginsels van die Suid-Afrikaanse Individuele Arbeidsreg. He also provided training, compiled and edited comprehensive training material for the Department of Higher Education North West specifically for FET Colleges. He assists in training pupils of GSA and is an accredited Assessor and Moderator with a passion for training and empowering others. Being exposed to the traditional litigation processes he realised the value in alternative dispute resolution processes rather than the traditional way of hard core litigation. It is crucial to select the right mediator for the dispute. Mediation gives the parties an opportunity to discuss their issues, clear up misunderstandings and find areas of agreement in a way never be possible in a lawsuit. Solutions are found within us based on fairness.
